Here's a fantastic example of an unusual shuffle commonly known as the "flat tire" shuffle (although I've also heard it referred to as a "back" shuffle or a "stumble" shuffle).
What makes this shuffle unique is that there is no traditional backbeat on 2&4. Instead, the emphasis is on the OFFBEATS (or the "ands"), giving the groove an uneven WOBBLE that sounds like a flat tire flopping down the road. This particular Flat Tire Shuffle comes to us courtesy of BB King and his razor sharp band, seen here playing "Every Day I Have The Blues" in the mid-1960s. The drummer is most likely Sonny Freeman, one of the best shufflers in the business.
My book, The Commandments of Early Rhythm and Blues Drumming, contains an incredible play-along track that utilizes the Flat Tire shuffle. If you've always wanted to make this unique groove a part of your repertoire, the book will be on sale at a 20% discount for a limited time only.
