Shuffle Drum Battle!

One of the highlights of my entire  career happened in 2009 when I had the chance to present a clinic with the great drummer Zoro at the Percussive Arts Society International Connection (PASIC) in Indianapolis, IN.

Performing on the main stage in front of 1800 people with my mentor (and one of the most popular drum educators on the planet) was both thrilling and incredibly intimidating at the same time.

The finale of our clinic was a drum "duet" that was dedicated to the evolution of (what else?) SHUFFLES. See for yourself how it went down in the video below.

Our jam covered several different types of shuffles. Technically, I suppose you could call this a "battle," but I think we both looked at it as an opportunity to share the amazing variety and depth that shuffles can offer all of us drummers.

The clinic with Zoro and myself was the culmination of an 8-year journey during which we had developed our book The Commandments of Early Rhythm and Blues Drumming.

A few days ago, I got the following email from Larry R., who has been taking the Shuffles course and just received his copy of The Commandments book:

"I am diggin’ the living $#!t outta this book! This is unbelievable; it’s waay more than what I expected. The education alone is worth the price of admission, but the sheet music and the grooves are so fun. I’ve loaded the CD into my phone.

I’m so glad there is a guy like you who cares enough to pursue the history of our instrument and what makes it so great."
