What It's All About:
Hey everybody, Daniel Glass here. I'd like to acknowledge something right off the bat. This pandemic and the lock down that's come with it has been really hard on drummers. First, we had all of our gigs cancelled. Then we realized that there was no way we could jam with others online in real time to even simulate what we once took for granted.
So, we were stuck. And to keep ourselves busy, many of us turned to online education. But like me, what you've probably noticed is that most of the drum clinics, Facebook Live sessions, and online courses being presented offer very little one-on-one interaction or individual feedback. Let’s face it, most online clinics amount to a one-way flow of information coming from the instructor, while participants sit at home and watch.
Seeing this state of affairs has been frustrating for me as an educator. Surely, I thought, there must be a better way to conduct group drum instruction online?
So my partners and I came up with the 2020 Online Jazz Intensive. Since 2016, I've hosted a similar event in New York City. Each year, the event attracts students from all over the world, who gather in the "Jazz Capital of the World" to develop their technique, play with a top-level jazz rhythm section, and work one-on-one with myself.
Of course, with the onset of the pandemic, this year's event (what would have been our fifth annual) was cancelled. But I didn't want to completely let it go.
So after months of hashing through a lot of ideas, we've refashioned the Daniel Glass Jazz Intensive as a unique online experience geared toward offering a seriously interactive experience for the participants.
The Jazz Intensive will be presented over two weekends between August 14-23, 2020 (for details, check the full itinerary below). Spreading the events out over a multi-days period allows you to dig more deeply into the material and make measurable progress. And to ensure that every student does make progress, we will be limiting attendance to just 12 participants for maximum one-on-one interaction.
At the Daniel Glass Online Jazz Intensive, here's what you'll walk away with:
- Swing: Drive any jazz band at a much deeper level.
- Comp: Learn the secrets of what to play behind a soloist.
- Solo: Get clarity and focus in developing your ideas.
- Technique: Not just WHAT to play, but the mechanics of HOW to actually play it.
NOTE: If you live in Denver, Colorado, the Jazz Intensive will include the unique opportunity to play and record with a professional rhythm section in a world-class studio. Click HERE for more details.
